It seems natural to glorify the first harvest of a fruit or vegetable. The first pick is when it is at it’s youngest, least-blemished, and most beautiful. This is true of many things:  green beans, arugula, spinach, squash, kale, strawberries. Except
for blackberries.
I hate to gloat, but the best blackberries of the year are happening right… now. Our u-pick operation is closed. They’re hardly worth picking in bulk for csa, for restaurants or for farmers market. But when I get a spare second on the farm and walk out there, the last ten ones on the vine are without a doubt, always the juiciest and sweetest of them all.
